13.10–13.40 Architecture and Art
Art is an important but many times misunderstood building block of our living environment. In many times the art is being used as a decoration that supposed to make our living space beautiful so we can feel better. But if we are reducing the art to a simple decorating piece we are missing the meaning of art. According to Leonardo Da Vinci there are three classes of people: those who see; those who see when they are shown and those who do not see.” Glass art has in the Czech Republic a very long tradition. Glass itself as a material has a special properties that can change an architectural space atmosphere into something very special. Architect Jan Benda with his wife is working in China since the beginning of 1990s and he designed or participated on design of more than 250 different projects of various size and function. Glass and glass art is in many cases an important part in his projects. Among those buildings which made a difference here in China are for example hotel Crowne Plaza in Suzhou, Narada Resort hotel in Sanya, R&D centre in Jianyin and many more. He is using his experience and expertise creating and shaping living or working environment of our global world.

Speaker: Ing. arch. Jan Benda, Ph.D., Archis
13.40-14.30 KENGO KUMA : ANTI-OBJECT
I would like to subvert the system invented in the 20th century. This is the objective of my architectural designs. A house is not just for sale; it is for people to live in. If your intention is not to stay in, and grow old with, the house, then you cannot really say that you live there. This applies to all architectural buildings. A building has a close relationship with the earth and its ownership should not be casually transferred. It is tightly connected to the philosophy and lifestyle of the people who live in it. This is the basis of architecture – the concept of being one with the earth.
I want architectural design to go back to the basics. I want it to rediscover the link between buildings and the earth. My aim is to subvert the dissociative approach of the European architecture inherited from the Greco-Roman period. By effecting these subversions, I want to let people know that we do have a choice.

Speaker: Kengo Kuma, Kengo Kuma and Associates
14.30-15.10 A Diamond in the Rough – Developing Successful Conversion Projects
An abandoned rotten tail building as the headquarters of an international luxury conglomerate; an abandoned textile factory as the lifestyle center piece of a new X thousand unit luxury residential development – Kokaistudios’ speech will examine the practice of re-converting overlooked areas and buildings and using these developments as a driving force in urban regeneration and rejuvenation. The talk will examine case studies both in China and abroad, and tie them into broader trends of authenticity, urban fabric & belonging. This talk, by award winning architect Filippo Gabbiani, comes at a crossroads in China’s development as real estate companies look for opportunities to be found within the existing built urban landscape in China rather than with purely greenfield developments and should be off interest to designers, developers, and government officials.

Speaker: Filippo Gabbiani, Founder and Chief Architect, Kokaistudios
15.10-15.40 Eudaemonic Existence
A Eudaemonic existence is one that is characterized by spiritual fulfilment and limitless romance.  It transcends the boundaries of social norms and embraces the ultimate freedoms. The concept of Eudaemonia is integral to MiQiu’s architectural and artistic vision both for the present and in the future. In his presentation, MiQiu, the chief designer for the three regional projects across the diverse cultures, histories and features most representative of South China, North China and their ethnic minorities, will talk about how the concept of a Eudaemonic existence is translated from an abstract ideal to a tangible reality.  Through careful planning and ambitious design, the artistic work is converted from perfectionistic concept, first to a specific modality, and then to real-life. For a Eudaemonic existence to become a reality for the majority, a sharing platform, one that brings together the wise to expound their knowledge, is required.  It needs to be diverse, inclusive and proactive.  It should also be completely independent of racial, religious or other social influences.

Speaker: MIQIU, Artist & Architect

09.30-11.30 GreenFest by POINTOLIFE
Urbanization in China is taking an unprecedented pace. Reports say China’s buildings consume one-quarter of the nation’s total energy, and this portion keeps expanding. Both public and private sectors have good reasons to improve building systems performance and reduce their environmental impact. Experts call for high performance standards to design new buildings and improve operations in existing buildings, so buildings will be turned into value-adding assets, and not expenses. Such concepts are still new to most local governments and developers, not to mention the difficulties in implementation. One developer, one architect, one operator, one benchmarker, one coach are going to evaluate this topic together. What are good for China? Which are practical? What are the priorities?

Speaker:a developer – Landsea
                 a designer – Brearley Architects + Urbanists
                 an operator – Colliers International
a benchmark – Chinese equivalent of LEED in the US
